One day in 1983 while walking in the desert north of Riyadh, John Pint came upon a hole the size of a serving plate, so he and his friend Dave Peters chiseled it open enough to squeeze into. Dangling from thirty feet of rope attached to the bumper of a truck, they descended into a cavern that had gone unnoticed for all of time. Thus began John Pint’s twenty-five-year odyssey into the deepest, darkest passages underground in Arabia.
John Pint has seen breathtaking natural wonders in Arabia that no human had seen before. Huge, squat stalagmites, giant pink silicon tulips hanging upside down from the ceiling by thin stems, fountains of stalactites suspended from above like chandeliers, and long, thin, white hairs of gypsum invisible from a few feet away, shimmering in a cave alive with sparkles.
This account of his discoveries in the caves and lava tubes of the kingdom is rich in speleological technique and geological description. It’s also quite endearing for his many stories of the camaraderie of his fellow cavers and the extravagant generosity of the many Bedouin that he encounters on his quest to discover the secrets hidden beneath the sands of Arabia. It is a story that will entrance speleologists and fascinate even the most claustrophobic armchair adventurer.

Underground in Arabia John Pint Reviews
This is a really interesting book. The author was the first to explore and document most of the remarkable caves of Saudi Arabia. He's a really good writer, and the reader shares the thrill of descending down a small hole on the desert floor to reach splendid canyons. Many people fantasize about being the first to make significant discoveries, and here Pint lets the reader share in that excitement. After many years of exploration, he was finally able to engage the Saudi government in recognizing the caves as a significant natural resource, and to at least start an effort to protect them, clearly a valuable contribution. But the best parts of the book are stories about humans facing nature - driving blindly around the vast desert looking for openings, interactions with incredibly helpful and generous local Saudis, using somewhat jury-rigged equipment to access the depths, and wriggling through narrow passages in hopes that they could return. You get to know the author, his wife, and a fascinating assortment of characters, Saudis and foreigners, who joined him in his adventures. I recommend that readers join the adventure as well.
Very interesting book , as a caver I was surprised .John introduced me by his book to a hidden world in KSA , few knew about it .
I was raised in Srabia and this fascinated me as i did not know this existed when i was there. I enjoyed the descriptions but mostly the nostalgia of recalling my times there and the references made that brought home those points. A nice read but a better trip down memory lane made it special to me
From the beginning you will discover beautiful things under the sand . There's a whole new world under the sand you won't believe! Beautiful formations. A geological adventure.
I found John Pint's latest book so fascinating. He has a gift for storytelling and holding the readers' rapt attention. I especially appreciated his insights into the culture of a people whose history is so vastly different from that of North Americans. In addition, the information on unexplored ancient underground territory is simply amazing. Who can say they have walked on unexplored areas of this third rock from the sun? Certainly John Pint and his crew can do just that.
Great photos, engaging text. Perfect for cave enthusiasts or anyone curious about Saudi Arabia!
Have you ever wondered how it feels to be in a place no one else has ever been to? Do you think there's nothing more for humankind to discover in this world? John and Susy Pint did it, living in Arabia, one of the most fascinating places on the globe! Who would think that a desert, one of the most uninhabitable areas of our planet, can secretly hold some of the most beautiful natural formations on earth? John tells us his experience as a professional explorer in a very simple and entertaining way, always showing us both sides of the coin how new discoveries lead to more knowledge and how new discoveries in the wrong hands actually lead to destruction of Mother Earth's and our ancient legacy. Very enjoyable reading!
