Sleepers Castle

Sleeper Castle An Epic Historical Romance from the Sunday Times Bestseller Barbara Erskine author 9780007513192 Books

I've been a fan of Barbara Erskine's books since I first read Lady of Hay over twenty years ago. I wasn't over keen on her last book The Darkest Hour but feel she's back on track with this one.

Miranda, Andy to her friends, goes to stay in Sleeper's Castle to house sit for her friend Sue, who is going to Australia for a year. It comes at the perfect time for Andy as she has just lost her partner of ten years and also her home and possessions to her partner's ex-wife who appears to be slightly unhinged.

Staying at Sleeper's she meets lots of new friends. Ella and Roy run a bookshop in Hay, Sian is a friend of Sue's who lives nearby and Bryn is the gardener who comes and goes as he pleases and appears to be quite surly. Then we have the mysterious Meryn who is mentioned a lot but doesn't appear until half way through the book.

Andy is a sensitive person and can sense ghosts. When she stays in Sleeper's Castle she starts to 'time slip' in her dreams. She goes back to the time of uprising and revolution between Wales and England.

Here she encounters Catrin and her father Daffyd who live in Sleeper's centuries before. Their housekeeper, Joan and a young boy Peter also live there. Edmund, Joan's brother is called on to assist Catrin's father. He and Catrin fall in love but there are many obstacles in their path.

This book is all action. The happenings of the past and present combine. There are lots of factual people from the past in the story as well as the fictional characters. And let's not forget the mad ex-wife and a cat with a very supercilious expression.

This is a fantastic read. History abounds here and the fictional story is every bit as good. The writing is superb as usual. Be prepared for sleepless nights if you start this book. You won't be able to put it down.

Read everything from my favourite writer, been waiting for this one, good as usual, could however have done either with a better reason for Rhona or no Rhona at all, bit thin & unbelievable, biggest problem, long wait for her next book, hurry, please hurry.
Classic Barbara Erskine, could not put this book down, it's up there with Lady of Hay as one of her better books. I love her ghost stories mingled with history....a must read
Great book. Excellent story. One of those "can't hardly put down" books that you will want to read again. Have read all her books and she
never disappoints. Lady of Hay is still my favorite, but this one comes a close second.
I enjoyed the story and learning about a piece of history that I knew very little about. I read mostly historical fiction for that reason, I learn about events and places that I am not too familiar with.

While I mostly enjoyed the story, there were some things that I found annoying, hence my rating of 3 stars.

One thing that I found annoying was the frequent use of, so and so, "woke with a start". While the book was about dreams, the constant use of people, "waking with a start" was redundant.

However, the thing that I disliked the most was the fact that there were several things that were not explained by the end of the book.

Reference was made to Rhona, the woman stalking Andy, as having a strong connection to the house, but it was never explained what the connection was, or why it was there.

Spoiler alert The death of Rhona, for me, just came out of nowhere. I do not think that someone like her would have ended her life in that way.

It was never explained as to why Rhona hated Andy so much, other than the fact that her ex-husband was happy with Andy.

One of the characters in the book said that Rhona and Andy had a psychic connection, but that also was never explained.

What was the psychic connection?

I kept thinking that the book would reveal that the events in the past that Andy would dream about would reveal that Rhona was there too, and that the connection between Andy and Rhona was centuries old.

However, that was never revealed in the book.

This was the first book I have read by this author and I will definitely read another one of her books, but I hope her other books do not leave so many things unexplained by the end of the book.
I absolutely loved this book and never wanted it to end. Sleeper's Castle refers to the ruins of an older castle above Hay in the Black Mountains, so named because people who sleep in it have dreams of a time 600 years ago. It is basically the story of one women in the current time who dreams of another woman who lived in the castle 600 years earlier. BONUS, and I do mean bonus in this book. It is also in part the story of Owain Glyndwr, Prince of Wales, and myth as no one knows what became of him.
I really enjoyed this book. I loved the historical aspect as well as the dream travelling between the past and present as well as the paranormal element. There was a solid storyline with several sub plots and some unexpected twists and turns. The writing was easy to read and I liked all the characters, and the addition of a modern psychopath made it all the more interesting. This was the first book by Barbara Erskine that I’ve read and I enjoyed it so much I’ll definitely be looking into more of her books. I would recommend this book if you like books by Susanna Kearsley and like historical mysteries.
As usual with Barbara Erskine's stories, the reader is catapulted back to a different time in history. This time it is back to the times of Owen Glendower and the wars for Wales's independence from the English. Switching back and forth from then to today we are immersed in intrigue, mystique, supernatural forces and true evil. Historically, the book is well researched and the town of Hay and its castle once more play a prominent part in this book as well as in the very well-known "Lady of Hay" by the same author.
